Maika`i (“my-ee-kah'ee”) is a Hawaiian word which means goodness. Nostalgic, Feminine & Romantic designs made for a modern day Goddress.

In 2019, our founder Vidya Sethi moved to a small village in Goa, to embrace a slow, mindful lifestyle. As a young girl, she was drawn to her mother’s endless collection of saris and local handwoven textiles while growing up in a small town in Odisha. Fashion and styling has been an integral part of her existence in adolescent years. She had a flair for designing garments made with saris and textiles borrowed from her mother's wardrobe.

She had the opportunity to immerse in the hand block print method of making textiles during her frequent travel to cities of Rajasthan in her previous job. The wooden block carvings, colours and the meticulously hand crafted textiles stirred a love affair that was impossible to shake off. The move to Goa encouraged a mindful lifestyle, free from the chatter of the city and inspired by the Susegad & Sunshine, Maikai was born. 

Maikai was created to empower women to be the most fun, feminine & fierce version of themselves through mindfully designed apparel. We believe that mindful creation and mindful consumption go hand in hand.

It is a movement of designing, creating, and buying garments for quality and longevity. It encourages slower production schedules, fair wages, lower carbon footprints, and (ideally) zero waste. It advocates for principles similar to the principles of slow food, such as good quality, clean environment, and fairness for both consumers and producers.

When you’re buying a 2$ shirt from a huge retail outlet, have you ever wondered how you’re getting a complete product for such a low rate? Where did the fabrics come from? What kind of wages have been paid to the person who made those? With fast fashion you’re encouraging poor quality and environment damaging clothing which is neither good for you as a buyer and is neither good for the worker that’s being treated as a commodity.

All Maikai pieces are made from handcrafted Indian textiles sourced directly from the makers and are loving handcrafted by our small team of artisans at Goa, in your unique measurements. Through our model we encourage you to be sure of clothes that you buy and we make you clothes that are sure of you.
