MAIKAI is an artisanal slow-fashion house preserving ancestral Indian crafts. We work directly with weaving communities across India, crafting pieces that can be passed through generations.

Everything here is made by hand, in small batches, by people whose names we know. We believe in craft as a climate solution. The most radical thing a woman can do with her wardrobe is slow down and choose well.

A note from the founder, Vidya Sethi

I believe fashion’s future belongs to brands willing to redesign the entire value chain where artisan prosperity and product excellence are prerequisites. Leading MAIKAI means asking different questions: How deep can our impact go? What’s worth keeping alive?

Beyond MAIKAI, I also facilitate breath work & sound journeys, and write two Substack publications on feminine embodiment and founder philosophy. All of this is the same practice. The business is spiritual work. The spiritual work informs the brand. Both ask the same question: how do we create systems that regenerate instead of extract?

Our Craft

Every MAIKAI piece begins with a hand. A weaver's hand adjusting tension on a loom in West Bengal. A block printer's hand in Rajasthan pressing a colour dipped carved wooden block into wet cloth. A jeweller's hand setting a gemstone into brass. We work with artisan communities whose families have practised these techniques for generations. Handloom weaving. Natural and low-impact dyeing. Block printing, silversmithing and stone setting. Each craft carries its own knowledge, its own memory, its own relationship between medium and maker.

We choose only natural looms for our garments because they are biodegradable, skin-safe, breathable, and outperform synthetics in comfort and longevity. We choose nickel free brass, earth made gemstones, and freshwater pearls for our jewellery because adornment deserves the same attention as the textiles we wear. The slight variations in every piece are signatures. Each garment and each jewel carries the rhythm of the person who made it.

Our Innovation

The entire activewear industry has assumed that performance requires synthetics. Polyester. Nylon. Spandex. Petroleum-based, non-biodegradable, microplastic-shedding fabrics pressed against the most intimate parts of a woman’s body. Indian weavers have been making cotton that supports, breathes, and moves with the body. Indigenous wisdom of our ancestors sits in the thread count, the weave structure, and the way a weaver adjusts tension on a loom.

MAIKAI 100% Cotton Sports Bra is the outcome of this process. It is the world’s first IP-registered sports bra made entirely from natural fibres. No synthetics. No elastane. No micro plastics. Full support, full coverage, full breathability. The work is two years of textile research put into translation. Ancestral material intelligence, placed inside a form the modern world recognises.

Our Values

Slow in how it's made. Small batches, crafted in rhythm with the hands and lives of our artisans, at the pace of human capacity. Rooted in living Indian craft traditions, in relationships with weaving communities whose knowledge has been refined across generations. Innovative in what it dares to reimagine, from the world's first 100% cotton sports bra to natural swim & intimates. And ethical at every point of contact, every maker earning a fair livelihood, every material chosen for its kindness to skin and to the earth.

MAIKAI is a way of being. A deep breath. A barefoot walk. A piece in your wardrobe that feels like home. Come find us in our studio in Goa. Write to our founder, Vidya. Join the circle.
